WHAT IS ATTIC OR LOFT INSULATION?
Attic insulation—also commonly called loft insulation—is installed at ceiling or attic-floor level to slow the movement of heat from the rooms below into the roof space. A poorly insulated attic can allow a substantial amount of household heat to escape, making rooms harder and more expensive to keep comfortable.
Before installation, the attic should be assessed to check the depth and condition of any existing insulation, ventilation routes, pipework, water tanks, electrical fittings, recessed lighting and safe access. Depending on the property, the work may involve installing completely new insulation or adding a top-up layer to bring older attic insulation closer to current energy-efficiency standards.
Professional attic-floor insulation is normally fitted between and across the ceiling joists to create a consistent thermal layer. Particular care must be taken to avoid blocking essential ventilation and to protect electrical fittings and other services within the roof space.
Properly installed attic or loft insulation can help reduce roof heat loss, improve indoor comfort, lower household heating demand and contribute to a better BER. It is often one of the most practical and cost-effective home energy improvements available.
SEAI attic insulation grants may be available for eligible Irish properties. Grant values depend on the property type and the applicant’s circumstances, and approval must be obtained before grant-supported work begins.
